Chapter 9
“Well, to begin. What can you tell me about this so-called Earth Warrior person that my parents invited to dinner? And I must add that I don’t believe in my mother’s juju. Except when it works.” Kwame laughed, shrugged, and lifted his hands palm up in the universal ‘whatever’ gesture. “And by the way,” he continued, “sorry about you not getting dinner. I hope you were able to eat something.”
I pulled out my second energy bar and held it up. Kwame shook his head and smiled. “I’ll have them send something from the kitchen for you. I think it might be best if I have it sent to your cottage. Agreed?”
“Yes, thank you. To the cottage would probably be best,” I agreed, thinking that if I ate here, Missus Basatte would put a juju spell on the food. Even though Grandma had Fey eyes on me, I wasn’t sure they would find me out here among the lychee trees.
“And as for this Earth Warrior person,” I said, “his name is Abubakar Azibo Gamba. And yes, he is an actual Earth Warrior.” I took a deep breath and added, “Well, you might as well know. I mean, now that we’re being all honest and stuff. Well, the thing is... uh... I’m of the Fey myself, you see and so... well, I just thought you should know.”
“You’re of the what?” he exclaimed. “What the devil are you talking about? And what in the world is a Fey?”
Kwame shook his head and began to pace. I took his place by the door as he walked back and forth, to and from the door. Finally, he sat down and motioned for me to join him on a rosewood settee in the center of the room. Although a little reluctant to give up my place of safety by the door, I walked towards him and sat in a chair facing him so that I could watch him and watch the door at the same time. Eyes on me or not, the Fey like best those who help themselves without crying wolf every time trouble pops up. I didn’t say anything. I figured it would be better if I just let him have his little bit of bluster and wait for him to wind down somewhat before trying to explain everything at once.
Kwame placed his elbows on his knees and put his head in his hands. I waited. Finally, he lifted his head and stared at me.
“Are you... uh. Well, what I’m thinking is that maybe I can help you if... maybe you left your meds someplace... you know, my family is well respected and if you need a prescription for... well, for whatever you need, I can send someone out right now to pick up something up. It wouldn’t be a problem. Really, Ms Martin, I can help if you let me... and no one needs to know. Okay?”
I grinned. I’m sure he saw my wide grin as the grin of a crazed lunatic, and then I just couldn’t help myself, I laughed so hard I had to bend over to catch my breath.
